Mouse Lounge -- Season 08, Episode 3
Show released Wednesday Dec 24, 2014 7:28 AM

(((HEADPHONES STRONGLY RECOMMENDED)))
Episode theme: The Mouse Lounge Holiday Special (2014 Edition!)

We lead off the show with segments from the Wonderful World of Color, circa 1962. Walt takes us on a Christmas tour, in "Holiday Time at Disneyland".

From the Disneyland Records Vault: Well before 1983s, "Mickey's Christmas Carol" in 1974 Disneyland Records released "Dickens' Christmas Carol". Alan Young, still kicking today at the tender age of 95 and performing as recently as 2012 on radio's "Adventures in Odessey," has his first but far from last turn as the irascible penny-pincher Scrooge McDuck. He, along with Alan Dinehart conceived and wrote the script. Clarence "Ducky" Nash plays Donald as Scrooge's nephew, Fred. As Wayne Alwine had yet to inherit the role of Mickey Mouse, which he performed in the film, on this record the role is portrayed by soundman, Jimmy MacDonald, who took over the role from Walt back in the 40s.

Also on the record was former Disneyland Records storyteller, Robie Lester as Minnie Mouse, Hal Smith who took on the role of Goofy for a few years before Bill Farmer, portrays Jacob Marley. Stalwart voice over artist Janet Waldo, best known for her work as Judy Jetson plays Mrs. Cratchett. The ghost of Christmas Past, voiced in the animated short by Eddie Carroll as Jiminy Cricket is played also played by Alan Young, only as Merlin the Magician. The ghost of Christmas Present, like the animated counterpart is still Willie the Giant, but voiced by Walker Edmiston, instead of Will Ryan. The voice of Christmas future, which in the film is inhabited by "Black Pete" is represented here as The Wicked Witch from Snow White, also played by Janet Waldo. While there are several similarities to the film, catchy but dated musical numbers time stamp the piece smack in the mid-70s. From an historical perspective, however, it's fascinating.

Next up from The Disney Animation Archives, enjoy the making of, "Mickey's Christmas Carol".

From the Attraction Morgue: While now we have the spectacular World of Color: Winter Dreams at Paradise Pier in Disney California Adventure, in 2001, for one single solitary season at that same location was another nighttime holiday show. Take in the scrumptious score of, Luminaria.

Next we'll will travel to two more corners of the glove to hear two favulous Christmastime tracks. In Walt Disney World, enjoy the "Once Upon a Christmastime Parade" and from 1995 in Tokyo Disneyland, "Stardust Christmas".

In The Mouse Lounge Ride Through Experience enjoy a live float through, it's a small world holiday

From the Live Performance and Shows Experience: Enjoy Disneyland's, "Dapper Dans" performing a gorgeous Christmas Medley.

Lastly, it's become a Mouse Lounge holiday tradition to feature some of my favorite Christmas tunes. This year enjoy the cast of Glee performing, "The Most Wonderful Day of the Year" and "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas. The Carpenters, "Merry Christmas, Darling". From an Evening in December, Volume 2, First Call's, and "Caroling, Caroling" and "Carol of the Bells". Take 6 performs their acapella rendition of, "Away in a Manger".

Next up, with the help of The Muppets, John Denver tells the story of, "Alfie the Christmas Tree" which closes with the beautiful, "It's in Every One of Us." And As I do each year, I'll end the show with Tori Amos', "Closing of the Year".

Mouse Lounge -- Season 06, Episode 14
Show released Friday December 5, 2014 12:16 AM

(((HEADPHONES STRONGLY RECOMMENDED)))
Episode theme: Travel lightspeed through the galaxy of Star Wars and kick off the magic of the holiday season.

For years now, the Mouse Lounge has had many different segments that help tell the story for that episode. For new listeners and those becoming re-acquainted with the Mouse Lounge Special Feature, they are: The Mouse Lounge Featurette: Mini documentaries I produce about the Disney feature films or theme park attractions, The Wonderful World of Color: Clips from the classic show, many featuring Walt himself. From the Disneyland Records Vault: Classic Storyteller short form and long play records, as well as 78s recorded before 1955, when Disneyland Records was formed. From the Disney Animation Archives: Stories and history of the feature films and shorts, From the Attraction Morgue: Recordings of still beloved attractions long gone, the Mouse Lounge Ride Through Experience: An immersive ride through of one of the Disney Parks current attractions. And the Show Experience: Take on one of the Disney Parks live shows or performance groups. It should feel like your sitting among the audience.

Now clearly, if every segment were used in every show, I'd likely be putting out four hour programs, so each episode in this season I'll keep things fresh by using the segments that best fit the theme of the episode.

In this episode, we continue our special feature: Part 4 of 5 of Double Disney.

From the Wonderful World of Color, listen to Walt as he discusses from his space age perspective, humanities exploration into space.

From the Disneyland Records Vault: Take a trip into the Star Wars universe, in "Droid World."

From the Attraction Morgue: We'll enjoy the attractions that previously occupied Disneyland's Tomorrowland south building, "Journey Into Inner Space" and the original Star Tours.

The Mouse Lounge Ride Through Experience is a recent binaural recording from Star Tours: The Journey Continues.

From the Film Archives: We segue from space to Christmas in this unlikely pairing of the holiday season and Star Wars. Mind you, I'm well aware that this special, which aired only once in 1978 and has never seen the light of day since defines the term, "jumped the shark" so I will mercifully play only an excerpt from the program. That said, for the self flagellating among you I will include a link to the full show in the show notes.

Lastly, now that you're in the holiday mood (if not sick to your stomach) we'll walk across the esplanade and take in the Show Experience, the latest version of World of Color: Frozen Dreams… I mean Winter Dreams.

Episode theme: Jim Finazzo Tribute

On January 31st, 2013, the Disney community lost one of its own. Great Disney fan and Disney Park employee, Jim Finazzo passed away today after a short illness. He said of himself, "I'm a very logical person, but I have a tendency to use that logic in twisted ways to allow myself to do things I shouldn't, or not do things I should. I also use it make leaps of logic to find the humor in situations where others didn't see it; until I point it out." In June 2011 Jim, Liana, and I, sat down at Trader Sam's and chatted about that which was among what Jim loved best, the Disney Parks. Rest in Peace, Jim Finazzo. You, Sir, were an E-Ticket friend!

(((HEADPHONES STRONGLY RECOMMENDED)))
Episode theme: I kiss a dead chick and hope to God she wakes up, falls in love with me and is willing to shack up on the first date!

From the Disney Archives: If Dave Smith collected it, you could hear it here. This segment is where you'll find classic Disneyland Storyteller records, antique 78s from the days before Disneyland Records plus brilliant archived radio broadcasts and other on-air novelties. This episode, in 1949 Disney was hard at work on another princess films which could make or break the studio, Cinderella. Ilene Woods, who provided the singing and speaking voice of Cinderella, and Eleanor Audley, famous as the step mother and later nine years later, Maleficent in Sleeping Beauty take on the roles of Snow White and the Wicked Queen in this RCA Victor Little Nipper storybook album, narrated by Dennis Day.

In those days before the existence of Disneyland Records, it was common for other labels to license the songs, score, and narration of a Disney film. Some, like this one were brilliant, utilizing talent from the Disney canon and top notch bandleaders, Paul Smith in this case. This is a version of Snow White like you've never heard it before… but no less enjoyable!

Frum Vault Disney: This is the home of all things Walt! Clips of Walt, his family, and staff discussing everything from the classic Disney features, theme parks, technology, music, and even Walt's vision of the future. Think of this segment as your opportunity to get inside the hearts and imagination of those that have created the magic for over eighty years! On countless DVDs you've heard Walt quoted, saying thing like…

These clips have been excerpted and featured in several DVDs and television specials, but in reality were part of a ½ hour interview conducted by Fletcher Markle who directed The Incredible Journey for Walt. It aired on the CBC in 1963 and has seldom been seen nor heard in its entirety since. Until now.

From the Studio Morgue: Delve into the catacombs deep beneath the Disney Studio in Burbank and unearth clips from Disney features, shorts, and television shows you may have long since forgotten! This episode we unearth the now legendary soup eating sequence from Snow White. It was supervised by one of Disney's legendary nine old men, Ward Kimball.

Disney Parks Attraction Ride Through / Show: This week, with the recent closure of one of the Magic Kingdom's original attractions, it's time to do a compare and contrast of the two versions of Snow White's Scary Adventures. We'll take in first the Disneyland version, then fly off to the East Coast for one of the last performances of the same attraction, recorded in April of last year (2012).

We'll close this week's show with a grab bag of cover tunes from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Who you're hearing will be in the show notes on Mouselounge.com.

Episode theme: The Mouse Lounge proffers a plethora of percussion!

Behind the Mickey Bar: as Liana and I talk about our upcoming meet at Westfest 2012 and then delve into Disney news.

Mouse Lounge Special Feature: The BBCs Russell Davis looks at how the archives have treated to the two faces of Walt Disney. Uncle Walt, who brought laughter and pleasure to millions, and… the rather tough businessman and social engineer. Enjoy the third of a five part series, Double Disney.

From the Disney Archives: From the January 30, 1966 episode of Wonderful World of Color, Professor Ludwig von Drake introduces us to the art of Jazz and the swinging short subject, "After You've Gone" from the 1946 package film, Make Mine Music!

From Vault Disney: A few weeks ago I played a Disneyland Record, "A Child's Introduction to Melody" based on the short, "Toot Whistle, Plunk, and Boom". Well your response was overwhelmingly positive but you asked, "What about the original cartoon"? The short was originally released to theaters in 1953 and made use of the then new widescreen format and novel stereophonic sound. It finally found life on DVD when it was released early on in the Walt Disney Treasures series called, "Disney Rarites" and I present the entire short for you here. If you've never seen it, you can find it on youtube, albeit with rather poor audio quality. Still, it's absolutely worth seeing.

Then, from the original Mickey Mouse Club in 1956, the Firehouse Five + 2 join the Mouseketeers for a rip roarin' Dixieland good time! Listen carefully during The Tiger Rag, that's Cubby O'Brien on the skins in a wicked awesome solo!

Disney Parks Attraction Ride Through / Show: Each show we present a high definition ride-through from a Disney Park East or a Disney Park West. Percussion in the parks was brought front and center last year, drum line and all with the introduction of Disneyland's, "Soundsational" parade. Have a listen to this drumming infused Mouse Lounge remix!

Then, we head over to Epcot where even the street sweepers must take a break and form, the Jamitors.

Episode theme: The Mouse Lounge reveals the magic of melody in Disneyland!

Behind the Mickey Bar: as Liana and I talk about the new Cars Land, the just opened Jolly Holiday Bakery, Castmember beards, Fastpass, and more.

Mouse Lounge Special Feature: The BBCs Russell Davis looks at how the archives have treated to the two faces of Walt Disney. Uncle Walt, who brought laughter and pleasure to millions, and… the rather tough businessman and social engineer. Enjoy the first of a five part series, Double Disney.

From the Disney Archives: Based on the Oscar winning cartoon, "Toot Whistle Plunk and Boom" comes a marvelous record narrated by the unmistakable Thurl Ravenscroft. From the 1963 Disneyland Record DQ-1232, have a listen to "A Child's Introduction to the Instruments of the Orchestra". Don't let the title fool you; this record was lavishly produced. It's hard to believe this mini masterpiece landed in the kiddy records bin.

From Vault Disney: We focus on the music of two Silly Symphonies from the thirties. The first is "Music Land" from 1935 and "The Woodland Café" from 1937. Both are perfect examples of the use of music to further the narrative, and are just great fun to listen to. I'll provide a description of the of the plot for Music Land, so you can better follow along.

Each episode we present a high definition ride-through from a Disney Park East or a Disney Park West. Did you know that Disneyland boasts ten different live performance groups that play in all four corners of the park? This episode, you'll get to hear from every one of them! You'll hear, the Main Street Piano Player, The Dapper Dans, Hook and Ladder Company, the Straw Hatters, Billy Hill and the Hillbillies, Farley the Fiddler, The Bootstrappers, The Jambalaya Jazz Band, The Royal Street Bachelors, and The Pearly Band. Plus, you'll hear special performances recorded on Fat Tuesday of the New Orleans Jazz Band, The Bayou Bash featuring Princess Tiana, and the Disneyland Band performing it's full noontime concert with the theme, "Sunday in the Park".

Episode theme: The Mouse Lounge celebrates a birthday and takes a trip around World Showcase!

First up, a Mouse Lounge Special Feature: The BBCs Russell Davis looks at how the archives have treated to the two faces of Walt Disney. Uncle Walt, who brought laughter and pleasure to millions, and… the rather tough businessman and social engineer. Enjoy the first of a five part series, Double Disney.

Next, from the Disney Archives, we dust off an old Capital Records album , DBX-3365 from 1954, as Disney Characters from countless films and shorts come to celebrate at Mickey Mouse’s Birthday Party.

Then, from Vault Disney: We travel to Epcot Center, circa 1982, as Danny Kaye introduces us to the wonders of World Showcase.

Each show we present a high definition ride-through from a Disney Park East or a Disney Park West. Enjoy a musical trip around World Showcase featuring the talented artists and music groups who perform each day, ending a Mouse Lounge mix of Illuminations: Reflections of Earth.

We close the show with a pair of musical soundtracks inspired by World Showcase. First, is the Laserphonic Fantasy. This show made its debut on the World Showcase Lagoon in June 1984 and as the name implies featured lasers including the first use of non-continuous lines in a laser animation and the first use of laser graphics on a water-droplet screen. Most of the soundtrack can be found on Don Dorsey's album "Busted".

Lastly, culling from le crème de la crème of French Romantic and Contemporary classical music, Impressions de France ranks as among the best soundtracks to be found anywhere in Epcot.

Episode theme: The Mouse Lounge gets in the Christmas spirit, Disney style

First, in From the Vault, we dust off an old radio recording of Walt and his gang of cartoon characters circa 1934. You’ve never heard Donald Duck more irascible or the Three Little Pigs repressible, despite the Big Bad Wolf’s insistence that they, come over for dinner. My wife was shocked to hear this sequence, commenting, “I’m so used to hearing Walt when he was older and had smoked for so many years. I can believe this voice could be Mickey Mouse. He was a tenor when he was a young man!” Indeed he was.

Next, we journey to the Disney properties and take in live performances. You’ll go into the now long gone Adventurers Club, visit Yehaa Bob, hear the Daper Dans, DCA’s Miner 49’ers, The Jambalaya Jazz Band, and Billy Hill and the Hillbillies.

Then, we take a spot in the shadow between the Matterhorn and Sleeping Beauty Castle to watch, A Christmas Fantasy Parade. This is a special Mouse Lounge Mix.

Finally, as has become a Christmas tradition on the Mouse Lounge, I’ll play for you some of my personal Christmas favorites. They may not be Disney, but they’re sure to get you into the spirit of the season!

And now, ladies and gentlemen, the tree is trimmed, the egg nog is out, and there’s a warm fire in the fireplace. Sit back and enjoy Mouse Lounge Christmas tidings.

Episode theme: The Mouse Lounge gets electrified!

I recently announced that I will be blogging for The Disney Driven Life. The focus of my articles will be on Disney music, from the films, parks, Walt Disney Records, and even those great 78s that preceded the formation of Disneyland records in 1955.

Of course I began planning my articles right away, and in doing so remembered I had produced a gem of a mini documentary nearly five years ago when I was living in Colorado. I looked up the show it came from and dragged it out of digital mothballs. Back then I believe the Mouse Lounge had two listeners, and I was one of them.

It pleases me greatly, now that the show has grown and matured to at least a half dozen DFs with positively nothing else better to do, to bring you, "The Musical History of the Main Street Electrical Parade." You'll learn the evolution of electronic music and along the way meet such luminaries as Bob Moog, Don Dorsey, Rick Wakeman, and Jean-Jacque Perrey (composer of the familiar Baroque Hoedown) and hear the brilliant music of Raymond Scott, Wendy Carlos, Yes, The Beau Hunks, Carl Stalling.

Episode theme: Jungle to Jungle

First, Liana and I go Behind the Mickey Bar to discuss Jungle Book, the film then we chat about the Jungle Cruise, the attraction.

Then, from BBC Radio, Phil Jupitus gets down to the Bare Necessities with the last of his five part series on the work of Walt Disney, in Disnified.

Jungle Cruise Poster Next, in From the Vault: Most fans of Disney animated features have seen the Jungle Book and remember how it ends, with Baghera and Baloo the Bear dancing into the sunset. But! On Disneyland's Little Long Playing record, "More Jungle Book" your story reader, Robie Lester tells you the epilogue of the story.

The Jungle Book just wouldn't be the favorite it has become without the songs that run throughout the film. The Sherman Brothers talk about how Walt got them involved in the show and the songs they wrote… and the ones they didn't!

Most fans can't imagine Jungle Book, or for that matter The Aristocats or Robin Hood without the remarkable, indelible voice of Phil Harris. Learn about this bandleader, comedian, radio and film star in this Mouse Lounge Mini Documentary.

Each show we present a high definition ride-through from a Disney Park East or a Disney Park West. Enjoy this experience down the rivers of the world in the Magic Kingdom's Jungle Cruise.

We close the show, first with a rare duet. From Disney's Wonderful World of Color 25th Anniversary special, Phil Harris is joined by Scatman Caruthers for a medley only this duo could sing. We wrap things up with Harry Connick Jr.'s swingin' arrangement of the Bare Necessities.

From Behind the Mickey Bar, Liana and I discuss Song of the South and the controversy that surrounds it. Be sure to login to the Mouse Lounge Blog at mouselounge.com and read my piece about the issue.

Song of the South Movie Poster In From the Vault we sample a clip from a classic Disney film, short, television or radio program, Disneyland Record. First, we dust off a delightful 1946 five-minute promo of the film featuring composer Johnny Mercer, Walt Disney, and the unflappable Donald Duck.

Then I'll tell you the tale of Song of the South with clips from the original film. It certainly doesn't replace watching it, but if you've loved Splash Mountain for more than two decades but still don't necessarily understand the narrative, this should help a lot!

Then, go behind the curtain and learn what it took to bring Song of the South to the Silver Screen.

Each show we present a high definition ride-through from a Disney Park East or a Disney Park West. Enjoy a ride through down Chickapin Hill into the Briar Patch on Splash Mountain in the Magic Kingdom.

We close the show with popular music covers from the picture. First, Satchmo himself brings his unique style to Zip-a-dee-doo-dah. Not to be out done, listen to Rosemary Clooney with her rendition of Everybody Has a Laughing Place! Next, Walt Disney and Johnny Mercer introduce June Hutton of the Pied Pipers who performs, Sooner or Later. This episode, the Mouse Lounge pillages and plunders with Pirates, parties with curious epicureans in a private club, and other alliterative nonsense!

From the World of Color: Walt gives Disneyland Ambassador Julie Ream a tour of the future New Orleans Square and we're there on a drizzly morning on opening day of Pirates of the Caribbean!

In from the Vault we sample a clip from a classic Disney film, short, television or radio program, Disneyland Record. This episode we pull out a 1966 vinyl classic, as Thurl Ravenscroft narrates the story of Pirates of the Caribbean.

Each show we present a high definition ride-through from a Disney Park East or a Disney Park West. With all due respect to Pirates-lite in the Magic Kingdom, this show we features the original and arguably the best.

Next, we move from Pirates to Epicureans as I share with you the origins of the mysterious Club 33, which opened to members only at the same time as Pirates. Episode theme: Journey Into Imagination

Before we delve into this episode's theme, we take in part three of three of a very special feature. Back in 2006, yours truly sat in on a Walt Disney World Audition Workshop. It was an intense couple of hours of enthusiastic performers needing a reality check and casting directors there to provide it, all in the spirit of better preparing those auditioning so they could earn one of the coveted performing spots. Whether you're a performer a not, enjoy an inside glimpse at what it takes to audition for Walt Disney World.

Next I'll introduce you to Shawn and Katie, hosts of the popular, Waltcast.

Then, learn about the history and rumored future of one of Epcot's most beloved and missed attractions, Journey Into Imagination.

Next, from D23s Destination D in May 2011, composer Richard Sherman is joined by none other than the Dreamfinder from the original Journey Into Imagination for a delightful sing-along.

From the Attraction Audio Archive we enjoy the full ride-through of the original Journey Into Imagination!

In from the Vault we sample a clip from a classic Disney film, short, television or radio program, Disneyland Record. On Epcot Center's opening day, October 1st 1982, NBC Today Show hosted a live special covering opening day. Bryant Gumble was on hand to interview the one and only Dreamfinder, portrayed by Ron Schneider, and Imagineer Barry Braverman!

Each show we present a high definition ride-through from a Disney Park East or a Disney Park West. This week take in a live version of the current version, Journey Into Imagination with Figment. I think you'll find the comparison rather striking… and maybe just a little disappointing. But don't take my word for it! Listen for yourself then join me on Facebook and post your comments!

We close the show with song played in the other Imagination Pavilion attraction on opening day, the 3D film, Magic Journeys. Like One Little Spark, Makin' Memories and Magic Journeys were written by the Sherman Brothers. Makin' Memories was part of the pre-show to the film, and Magic Journeys served as the films theme music.

Episode theme: Labor Day Special: A Disneyland Glide-through

Special Feature: Most of us have heard many different live recordings of attractions and shows from the parks. Often, these include dialogue with the host and his guests.

The Glide-through allows you to take in the soundscape with only the sounds of the park, as you would hear it if you were somehow floating through the park by yourself, allowing you to take in details of the ambience. So far that may sound somewhat familiar, but the Glide-thru is crafted such so you will also enjoy a show, attraction, or live music performance during the journey, always something special. You never know where you’ll start, or where you’ll end up, but the Glide-through will always be entertaining as you float through the parks on the breeze of the stereoscape.

What you are about to hear was recorded Saturday, September 3rd, Labor Day weekend 2011. Imagine it’s the last hurrah of summer in the mid afternoon. The park is full of happy guests on a beautiful summer day. There’s an electric energy in the air you can actually hear.

(((HEADPHONES STRONGLY RECOMMENDED)))
Episode theme: A Bear of Very Little Brain

Special Feature: Back in 2006, yours truly sat in on a Walt Disney World Audition Workshop.

From the Vault: Winnie the Pooh, penned by A.A. Milne and illustrated by E.H. Shepherd was first published in 1926. In 1930 Stephen Slesinger purchased the U.S. merchandising, television, recording and other trade rights to the works from the author for a $1000 advance and 66% of Slesinger's income, creating the modern licensing industry. By November 1931, Pooh was a $50 million-a-year business. Slesinger marketed Pooh and his friends for more than 30 years, creating the first Pooh doll, record, board game, puzzle, US radio broadcast, animation, and motion picture film.[10]

In 1961, Disney acquired rights from Slesinger to produce articles of merchandise based on characters from its feature animation. But before Disney made their now classic films, several audio interpretations of the Pooh stories were made. Some thirty years after the book's initial publication, RCA's Little Nipper series released an "Upside Down" record, which had a story on each side. We feature here, Winnie the Pooh and the Heffalump, narrated by Jimmy Stewart. Be sure to go to the Mouse Lounge multimedia page to listen to the flip side of the record, Winnie the Pooh and Tigger.

From the Disney Library: Listen to a brief history of Winnie the Pooh.

Behind the Mickey Bar: Liana and I fling a little Pooh of our own. I even sing a few bars. Don't be scared.

Attraction Ridethrough: I serve up both versions of Pooh, from Fantasyland in the Magic Kingdom, where many of you think the attraction truly belongs, and back to the West coast in Critter Country. Listen to the subtle differences between the two. Which do you prefer, and why? Be sure to comment below.

Disney Icon Interview: Meet Paul Winchell one of the most recognized voices in the world. He created the voice of Tigger for the Winnie the Pooh motion pictures and TV series. In 1974 he won the Grammy Award for BEST Children's recording from the film Winnie the Pooh and Tigger Too. Paul also supplied the voice for Boomer in the Fox and the Hound, the Siamese cat in the Aristocats, and number of incidental voices. For Hanna Barbara he was Dick Dastardly of the Wacky Races. Fleagle of the Banana of Splits, and Zummy of the Gummy Bears, and Gargamel of the Smurfs. Paul gained the admiration of millions animation fans and earned the prestigious title of Disney icon.

He was married to Jean, a British lady, and inserted the phrase, TTFN, Ta-ta-for-now against Disney's wishes but it caught on with the youngsters. When the film appeared in England it created a sensation. A national survey was once taken where over a 1000 children were asked, "If you could meet any cartoon character, which one would it be." Well it wasn't Mickey Mouse. Believe it or not the majority of the children said, "Tigger". Prior to his work for Disney, Paul was a crack ventriloquist. With Edgar Bergin as his inspiration, Paul broke into radio and hosted several children's programs in the 50s and 60s. But let's listen to Paul tell the story himself in this wonderful interview with BBC Scotland in 2004, just a year before Paul passed away.

Music Selections: We close the show with a duo of Pooh Tracks! First, from the Walt Disney Records archive collection, the Chieftains perform the title track, Winnie the Pooh. Then, while not really a "Disney" tune per se, its hard to separate Winnie the Pooh from one of Kenny Loggins most memorable performances, "Return to Pooh Corner".

Episode theme: Little Boat... Big Boat

Special Feature: Back in 2006, yours truly sat in on a Walt Disney World Audition Workshop. It was an intense couple of hours of enthusiastic performers needing a reality check and casting directors there to provide it, all in the spirit of better preparing those auditioning so they could earn one of the coveted performing spots. For me, largely due to their training, I earned a callback for a role that unfortunately no one was cast for, as the Magic Kingdom cancelled the show. Whether you're a performer a not, enjoy the first of this three part series to get an inside glimpse at what it takes to audition for Walt Disney World.

From the Vault: Little Toot is a children's story written and illustrated by Hardie Gramatky in 1939. It tells the story of Little Toot, an anthropomorphic tugboat child, who thought that work was a joke, and preferred to play around making figure 8's, and other games, that irritate the other tugboats, who call him a "Sissy". He's rejected by the tugboat community and dejectedly drifts out to sea, where he accidentally discovers a shipwrecked liner and a chance to prove his worth. The book has been continually in print for 71 years. In 2007, in honor of what would have been Hardie Gramatky's 100th birthday, Penguin Putnam publishers rescanned the original artwork, added nine original full-color sketches by the illustrator, and brought back detailed endpapers so the book has been restored to its first-edition colors and vibrancy. Daniel Pinkwater and Scott Simon read and raved about the restored classic edition on NPR's "Weekend Edition" in October 2007.

In the animated Disney version Little Toot actually disgraces his father "Big Toot" with his childish antics, and is exiled from the harbor. There he learns that he must give up his foolishness and grow up in order to earn the respect of the other boats and of his father.

The story appeared in an animated segment of the Walt Disney Studios film Melody Time in 1948, with the story being sung by the Andrews Sisters with Vic Schoen providing the background musical score. When Capitol Records produced a record with the Little Toot song, it was the first children's record to hit the 1,000,000 sales mark on Billboard, according to then-president Alan Livingston.

From the World of Color: Climb aboard a much larger vessel and circumnavigate Tom Sawyer Island circa 1962. From Disneyland After Dark, join in on the fun aboard the Mark Twain with Louis Armstrong, the Dapper Dans, and blues legend, Monette Moore, who filmed her scenes for the show only a few short days before her death.

From the Disneyland Attraction Archives: From the Disneyland Attraction Archives: Stay aboard the Mark Twain and listen to the narration and soundtrack that echoed through the decks of this classic Disneyland water faring vessel. That's the legendary Thurl Ravenscoft's dulcet basso profundo performing the opening narration. Can you name the other attractions where his voice appears?

Attraction Ridethrough: Each show we present a high definition ride-through from a Disney Park East or a Disney Park West. This episode we take a musical trip around the Rivers of America in Disneyland with the Main Street Strawhatters performing a full set aboard the Mark Twain.

We close the show with a duo of boat-themed tracks. First, from the original 1953 Peter Pan soundtrack, a rare Oliver Wallace demo of a song discarded before the film was complete. Have a listed to, "The Boatswain's Song.

Then disembark from the show into Old New Orleans with the classic, "River Boat Shuffle".

Episode theme: The Lounge gets glittered and gowned with the Disney Princesses!

In "Behind the Mickey Bar": Liana and I sit down and discuss the phenomenon that is the Disney Princess franchise.

From the Vault: From April 1946, during the first re-release to theaters of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, we hear a radio dramatization of the film, with many from the original cast. This is truly a brilliant time capsule of post war in home entertainment with a wonderful performance by the still very young Adriana Casselotti as Snow White.

From the Walt Disney Company Archives: Let's go back in time and back again, and hear for ourselves the difference sixty years can make as we listen to "Someday My Prince Will Come" from Cinderella and the Seven Dwarfs, and "Almost There" from The Princess and the Frog. Two princesses, two very different ways of living.

Each show we present a high definition ride-through from a Disney Park East or a Disney Park West. This week travel through a land of enchantment and stilted narration no teenager could ever do justice on the Storybookland Canal Boats.

We close the show with a pair of unexpected Princess tracks. The first is If You Can Dream, the first song that was originally written and recorded specifically for the Disney Princess franchise. It was first released on the album Disney Princess: The Ultimate Song Collection.

The song is sung from the point of view of the first eight official Disney Princesses (though only seven of them actually sing). It has been featured on several Disney music CDs, and its music video is present on nearly every Disney Princess DVD, as either an extra or a Sing-Along, and has been shown numerous times on the Disney Channel. To this day the song still plays on the official Disney Princess website.

Finally, the incomparable Pogo, best known for spinning creative melodies of his own sampling Disney films, has released a new track with the Disney Princesses. Here now, listen to Bloom… and be sure to log into the multimedia section of Mouselounge.com to watch the extraordinary video!

Episode theme: The Mouse Lounge has a SPOOKTACULAR celebration!

Each week, in From the Vault we sample a clip from a classic Disney film, short, television or radio program, or Disneyland Record. This week we present a Halloween triple treat! First up; from 1929, the very first Silly Symphony cartoon. In 1994, it was voted #18 of the 50 Greatest Cartoons of all time by members of the animation field. Carl Stalling, the former Kansas City organist who would later go on to write the scores to countless Warner Brothers cartoons, adapts Edvard Grieg's "The March of the Trolls" for part of the music and takes queues from Saint-Saens composition, Dance Macabre. Have a listen to, The Skeleton Dance.

Next, from 1949's Ichabod and Mr. Toad, the last of the so-called, "package films," we feature a clip from The Legend of Sleepy Hollow where Bing Crosby explains in song that you can't reason with a headless man.

And finally, in 1964 the Disneyland haunted mansion, was sitting empty, unoccupied by any of the 999 ghosts. Problems with the story line, and the distraction of designing Walt Disney's groundbreaking attractions for the 1964 New York Worlds Fair, ("It's a Small World" and "The Carousel of Progress") had postponed the completion of the attraction.

Perhaps to remind the public that the haunted mansion would be opening some time in the future, Disneyland Records released "Chilling, Thrilling Sounds of the Haunted House". If you were a kid in the U.S. during the 60's and 70's, you are probably familiar with the album, or at least with some of the signature sounds on it.

The album was a collection of spooky sound effects from the Disney library of sounds that had been collected after many years of producing movies and cartoons.

The album was first released in 1964 with a white sleeve featuring Paul Wenzel's gloomy, mysterious painting of a haunted house ). The album was released several more times during the 70's and most people will remember the orange LP sleeve art from the 1973 release.

Side One of the album has a collection of ten creepy stories narrated by Laura Olsher. The stories made use of many sound effects, and transported many a child into a realm of supernatural, spooky adventures. Side Two had a collection of sound effects. The moans, groans, cats, dogs, creaks, thunder and crashes could be heard in almost every Halloween party and home brewed haunted house display.

Mouse Lounge listeners responding to a question I posed on Facebook whether to play the nostalgic album version or pristine cuts from the CD overwhelmingly asked for the record. So enjoy side one of "Chilling, Thrilling Sounds of the Haunted House".

From the Walt Disney Archives: In 1982, Disney released Disney's Halloween Treat, a 47-minute Halloween themed clip show featuring a compilation of Disney animated shorts involving spooky or supernatural themes as well as excerpted segments from Disney feature films.

The special was narrated by a jack o'lantern puppet, which was also used in an educational short to talk about Halloween safety called "Disney's Haunted Halloween".

The opening and closing credits feature its own theme song with lyrics written by Galen R. Brandt and music by John Debney, who also wrote the first version of the Haunted Mansion Holiday. Enjoy the theme, to "Disney's Halloween Treat!"

Each week we present a high definition ride-through from a Disney Park East or a Disney Park West. This week, from Disneyland, enjoy the Haunted Mansion Holiday.

In this episode, the Mouse Lounge takes in a languorous, lazy summer day…at 55 miles per hour of course.

Each week, in From the Vault we sample a clip from a classic Disney film, short, television or radio program, or Disneyland Record. In 1963 Walt Disney Productions released the feature film Summer Magic, starring Hayley Mills, Burl Ives, and Dorothy McGuire in a story about a Boston widow and her children taking up residence in a small town in Maine. The film was based on the book "Mother Carey's Chickens" by Kate Douglas Wiggin. The film was Mills' fourth of six films for Disney, and the young actress received a Golden Globe nomination for her work.

The soundtrack from the picture yielded some very good songs, including the Richard Sherman composition, the Ugly Bug Ball; which went on to be a popular song that year. Two other cuts on the record however will be of interest to Disney Park fans. Flitterin' and Beautiful Beulah can often be heard in instrumental form as you stroll down Main Street USA. Now have a listen to these familiar melodies, complete with their original lyrics.

From the Walt Disney Archives: On the evening of June 25th, D23 members gathered at the Walt Disney Theater on the Disney Studios lot in Burbank to witness a once in a lifetime event. Dave Smith, Chief Archivist for the Walt Disney Company celebrated his and it's 40th anniversary! While tinged with just the slightest bit of sadness with the fresh reveal Dave will be retiring in October; the evening was a celebration in the truest sense. Disney luminaries such as CEO Bob Iger, composer Richard Sherman, and Imagineers Tony Baxter and Bob Gurr, were in attendance.

Leonard Maltin interviewed Dave during the occasion. We present the entirety of that interview here.

Each week we present a high definition ride-through from a Disney Park East or a Disney Park West. This week, summer isn't complete without the rush of a roller coaster and fireworks. In DCA's Paradise Pier, take a ride on California Screamin'! Then, let's cross the esplanade and take in Magical!, Disney's Nightastic fireworks spectacular. A year before the first major expansion of Disneyland that was to add the Matterhorn, Monorail, and subs, on June 14, 1958, Alice in Wonderland, the attraction opened. Mouse Lounge -- Season 04, Episode 02
(((HEADPHONES STRONGLY RECOMMENDED)))
In this episode of the Mouse Lounge, celebrate 70 years with the one that started it all, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

From the Walt Disney Family Museum: In a darkened theater filled to overflowing at the D23 Expo, I had the honor of sitting in the presence of true Disney legends and experts. Producer, Don Hahn moderates a panel discussion about Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Attending were animator, Andreas Deja, who invoked life into Scar in the Lion King, and Gaston in Beauty and the Beast, Eric Goldberg, responsible for animating the Genie in Aladdin, and directing the jaw dropping Rhapsody in Blue and hilarious Flamingo with a Yo Yo sequences in Fantasia 2000, Disney historian and author, J.B. Kaufman, animation historian and prolific writer, Charles Solomon, and special guest, looking dazzling at 90 years young, Marge Gower Champion, the live action model for Snow White.

In "From the Vault" we serve up a double feature. At the beginning of 1938, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was taking America by storm. By using the radio medium, Walt was able to stoke the fire of his marketing machine promoting Snow White; while at the same time, entertaining a national audience. On January 2nd 1938, a radio episode of The Mickey Mouse Theater hit the airwaves, coupling elements from the picture with other famous Disney characters.

Next, scoop up slices of film from the cutting room floor and wonder, what if? Have a listen right here to the marvelous but deleted soup sequence from Snow White.

Each week we present a high definition ride-through from a Disney Park East or a Disney Park West. This week, enjoy a one of a kind compare and contrast as you hear back to back versions of Snow White's Scary Adventures, first in on the west coast in Disneyland then in Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom. There are striking differences between the two. Which do you like better?

We'll close this week's show with unique takes from the soundtrack. First from the newly remastered original soundtrack, the infectious Silly Song; then Satchmo Armstrong teaches you how to Whistle While You Work, and finishing with Ashley Tisdale's turn at Some Day My Prince Will Come.

In this episode of the Mouse Lounge, explore Walt's Small World.

In this episode of the Mouse Lounge, we hop into our DC-3 and head south of the border.

From the Walt Disney Family Museum: Listen as Walt describes the sights and sounds of the lands in Latin America.

From Walt Disney: The Triumph of American Imagination: By 1940, the Walt Disney Studio had moved from Hyperion Avenue to the new Burbank studio still used today. The studio had been overrun by union organizers and production on Bambi was slowed to a crawl.

Those crossing the picket line were working on Dumbo, fronted as a picture they could just knock out quickly. While the lawyers were settling with striking workers in 1941, Walt needed to get away and find other projects.

He found it in a working trip to South America. Learn about what prompted this material gathering tour of South America and the two unusual movies that resulted from it.

This week in the Mouse Lounge: A full docket of Disney News from our departments Entertainment (including a GREAT guest correspondent!), Theme Parks East, Theme Parks West, and Business.

Each week in From the Vault we sample a clip from a classic Disney film, short, television or radio program, or Disneyland Record. Walt may not have been an auto aficionado; practical transportation (with the notable exception of a backyard train) was his moteris operandi. He did realize however that car junkies and other addled nitwits that occupy the road make for some great comedic and educational material.

From 1950, we take in the entirety of Motor Mania. Now like several weeks ago with the short, Reason and Emotion this cartoon got the Ludwig von Drake treatment for the Wonderful World of Color anthology series. The difference however, is that the former was a wartime cartoon, and was edited for content when it was presented to television audiences. Motor Mania on the other hand is plain old Goofy silliness and the narration remains intact. That said, the delivery of the narration is much funnier with Ludwig, so that version is featured on the podcast.

Next up you'll hear a segment from the classic 1970 Dad, Can I Borrow the Car? If you’re at a computer, log into the multimedia section of mouselounge.com where I have posted the script from this sequence and screen captures as well. Plus, without cheating (Google or Wiki, etc.), see if you can pick out who's narrating the short and who's voice is in the training film sequence. If you do get it, it'll be just barely.

Each week we present a high definition ride-through from a Disney Park East and a Disney Park West. This week in Disney Parks West, we present our featured attraction; Autopia. (Just kidding!) Actually, what better way to exemplify a road trip than with one of the first loonies on the road, Mr. Toad on Mr. Toad's Wild Ride.

From the Disney Family Museum; Since The Walt Disney Company has recently reacquired the rights to Oswald the Lucky Rabbit and announced a December release of Oswald shorts on Wave VII of the Walt Disney Treasures series, hear in Walt's own words how he lost the character and what happened to him.

From Disney Parks East, we head over to Epcot and Futureworld and take a wild ride of our own, on Test Track.

Each week we feature a unique take on Disney music. On this podcast, enjoy a special Mouse Lounge Mix from the movies, with fantastic references to cars and their drivers. This is a real hoot!

This week in the Mouse Lounge: A full docket of Disney News from our departments Entertainment, Theme Parks East, Theme Parks West, and Business

Each week in From the Vault we sample a clip from a classic Disney film, short, television or radio program, or Disneyland Record. It has long been thought that the Mickey Mouse Club lead-ins recorded in 1955 were the last time Walt ever voiced the famous mouse. With a recent discovery in the Disney Archive, that is no longer true. Presented in 1962 at Radio City Music Hall in New York City, Walt filmed a special Cinemascope presentation of, Disneyland USA, interacting with a costumed Mickey Mouse performing live on the stage. The voice of Mickey is irrefutably Walt.

Each week we present a high definition ride-through from a Disney Park East and a Disney Park West. This week in Disney Parks West, we present our featured attraction; Pirates of the Caribbean recorded in January 2007. From the sounds of bayou water lapping up against the side of the boat, to the rattling percussion of cannon fire; don your headphones and do not miss this exceptional ride-through.

From the Disney Family Museum; Listen to Walt as he talks about his relationship with the new medium of television and how that leads to the beginnings of Disneyland. Then hear Diane Disney Miller as describes to Leonard Maltin those days when she was very young and she and her sister Sharon used to spend Saturday afternoons with their famous father at the then new Disney Studios in Burbank.

From Disney Parks East, we head over to the Magic Kingdoms Liberty Square, just in front of the docked Liberty Belle at the Pirates and Princess Party and take in a set of the Riverboat Roulettes. They wrote the third song in the set, Jolly Roger, which was re-tooled and used on the pirate hijacked Liberty Belle throughout the party.

Each week we feature a unique take on Disney music. On this podcast, enjoy the Dixieland sounds of New Orleans, Disney-style as we take in a set of the Firehouse Five Plus two, traversing thirteen years. One number is from their 1949 debut album, The Firehouse Five Plus Two Story, while the other two songs in the set are from Live from the Golden Horseshoe in Disneyland, circa 1962.

From Disneyland's opening day, July 17th, 1955 join hosts Ronald Regan and Walt Disney as they welcome you to Frontierland. Art Linkletter then introduces Fess Parker and Buddy Ebson who sing about Davy Crockett's trusty gun, "'Ol Betsy".

From Disneyland's Fourth Anniversary Show in 1957, Fess sings "The Ballad of Andy Burnett," who then comes on stage to perform "Ladies in the Sky." Back in Disneyland circa 1959 on the border of Tomorrowland and Fantasyland we listen to the "Matterhorn Mountain Hoedown."

From Melody Time we hear the legend of the rootin'est tootin'est cowboy in the West! Nope, it's not Woody; back in 1948, it was "Pecos Bill." Not to be outdone, Rider's in the Sky pay homage to Woody and his crew; from Toy Story 2, enjoy "Woody's Roundup Medley."

From the Disney Family Museum; With Disneyland now running smoothly, Walt sought new challenges and found it when Pamela Travers finally agreed to let Walt film her classic tale of Mary Poppins.

From Disney Parks East, we take a classic adventure aboard, The Jungle Cruise. With a hysterically pithy skipper on board, this trip around the rivers of the world is a real hoot! Listen carefully for a simultaneous homage to Paul Barrie and a cough drop.

Nor was it spared the effects of the growing conflict in Europe which would soon hit very, very close to home.

Each week, in From the Vault we sample a clip from a classic Disney film, short, television or radio program, or Disneyland Record. This week we feature a new segment, Revisionist Disney.

Fans of the show, The Wonderful World of Color may remember a classic cartoon within a 1962 episode called, Ducking Disaster with Donald Duck. The show featured Ludwig von Drake illustrating what can happen when you let emotion run away with your common sense.

What fans of the series may not know is this segment is derived from a 1943 Academy Award nominated short short called Reason and Emotion. Back during WWII this cartoon had a completely different connotation, as emotion was largely thought to be the lynch pin through which Hitler could wield his evil influence.

Join us in the Mouse Lounge as we compare the similarities and differences in the 1943 versus the 1962 audio tracks. I think youll then understand why this segment is called, Revisionist Disney. Logon to http://www.mouselounge.com/multimedia.html to follow along with the script.

This week in the Mouse Lounge, another Kissimmee Comfort Suites edition of the Mouse Lounge. Fantastic audio about the Lilly Belle Riverboat.

First, take an audio tour of the vessel, with every clank, click, hiss, whirr, and rumble inundating your senses. Then, cast off and listen to Mark Twain narrate as he navigates the Rivers of America.

*Bonus Track* Recorded TODAY (Thursday, October 12) in the Canadian Pavillion! The last track of Off Kilter's 5:30 set! The entire performance will appear on a future show.

Once settled into my new digs out West, fresh full-size shows will resume. I've some excellent material in the pipe.

This week in the Mouse Lounge, we remember a Walt Disney quote regarding Mickey Mouse: All we ever intended for him, or expected of him, was that he should continue to make people everywhere chuckle with him and at him. We didn’t burden him with any social symbolism, we made him no mouth piece for frustrations or harsh satire. Mickey was simply a little personality assigned to the purposes of laughter.

To this character and in the spirit that every so often we not take all our ills so seriously we dedicate this podcast.

Now EVERYTHING in this podcast is somehow tied together with a running theme. What are the three words I have in mind?

In From the Vault this week, Shirley Temple tells the tale of Bambi, from this 1943 RCA Little Nipper album on 78s. The first half is featured here in the podcast. Be sure to check out the multimedia section of Mouselounge.com and download the second half of the story as well as pictures of the album itself.

Each week we present a high definition ride-through from a Disney Park East and a Disney Park West. This week from Walt Disney Worlds experience a grand circle tour of the Magic Kingdom on the Walt Disney World Railroad.

From Disney Parks West we head over to Disneys California Adventure for a ride on Heimlich's Chew Chew Train.

Each week we feature a unique take on Disney music. From Gold Company we hear a fabulous arrangement of I've Got No Strings.

Last but not least…each week we sample a clip from a classic Disney film, short or television program. This week, from Saludos Amigos we present Aquarela do Brasil (or Watercolor of Brazil), the finale of the film. In 1943 Tico Tico became a huge hit for organist Ethel Smith, who was featured in the film. This extended sequence in which Donald and Joe dance around the organ and we see some exquisite shots of Ethels flying fingers was deleted for the DVD release of Saludos Amigos. I have attempted to reconstruct the sequence with the original recording of Tico Tico performed by Ethel Smith and the Bando Carioca from vinyl.
